Andy is now running his one-day course, 'An Introduction
to traditional Leatherwork', in Hexham, Northumberland.
This will take place on the last Saturday of every month, will run from 10:00
to 16:00 and will be at a cost of £75-00.
Further courses are available in intermediate and advanced leatherworking
and in more specialist areas of the craft.

Also available will be courses on making archaeological and historical reconstructions,
in leather and in many other materials. Alongside the practical skills, these
courses will include guidance on undertaking research and access to actual
artefacts, wherever possible.
It is intended that the courses will be run on a regular and frequent basis.

Andy Bates has been practising and teaching leatherwork
and other traditional crafts for around twenty years. He has taught at Walsall
Leather Museum and has run leatherwork masterclasses at Cleveland College
of Art and Design.
He has exhibited pieces in Durham Art Gallery and at Bamburgh Castle Museum,
amongst other locations.
Andy has made reconstructions for BBC's 'Meet the Ancestors' and for the Discovery
Channel's 'The Bone Detective' and most recently completed several replica
pieces, commissioned by the Yeavering Trust, which were based on finds excavated
by Brian Hope-Taylor. These were exhibited at Durham's Fulling Mill Museum
and at Bede's World.
Andy has published academic papers on the subject of experimental archaeology
and he continues to write on historical and archaeological matters.
