Le Prevo Leathers leather hides

Leather is sold in shoulders, sides, butts or hides (see Technical Information for explanation of terms) NOT in single square feet. Samples are available on request. If sending your request by e-mail, please include your address. Suitability for a particular use is the responsibility of the user. Cut skins are not returnable.

These leathers have no surface treatment and are suitable for carving or embossing or dying. They are also used for ‘wet-moulding’. Because the final nature of the leather is under the control of the leatherworker, they have a wide variety of uses. 0.8/1.0 mm kips are popular for fine molding and wallet linings. 1¼/1½ kips are used to make purses and bookmarks while falconers use it for hoods and jesses. Goat has similar uses to the thicker kip but is stronger. The columbo sides have some scaring or uneven colour which reduces the price. They are ideally suited for cutting smaller components or when a more ‘lived-in’ look is required such as turn shoes, antiques or re-enactment. The thinner shoulders are used for bag and case making while the thicker grades are the perfect length for sturdy belts.

These leathers are made by splitting a hide into two sheets. At first the lower sheet has a rough surface but after spraying with pigment this is rendered smooth again. The 2.6/2.8 mm ‘butt’ split is a classic material in the belt trade. A butt is roughly 4½ ft by 4½ft and is ideal for sturdy straps.

These suedes are made by splitting a hide into two sheets. At first the lower sheet has a rough surface but after buffing a velvety nap is raised. It normally has a nap on both sides but the tanner pays more attention to one side and this is regarded as the ‘right side’. It is a strong material with a wide variety of uses. The lighter weights are used for clothing soft bags and belts. The heavier grades are used for riding chaps and shoes. Being sueded on both sides makes it popular with westerners for tasseled goods.

This pigskin is intended to be used on the leather side but is often clean enough to be used as a suede.

This is a smooth clothing leather made from sheepskin. Nappa is highly regarded for its soft pliable touch, making it suitable for skirts and soft jackets. It is made in a range of colours which change constantly with fashion.

This is the strongest clothing leather. The size of the skins leads to greater cutting efficiency and the length enables a pair of trousers to be made without joins at the knee. 0.6/0.8 mm is suitable for fashion garments, 0.9/1.1 mm is used for heavier clothing such as a mans jacket, and 1.2/1.4 is a suitable weight for motorcycle leathers.

This is made by a process which bonds metal foil to a pigskin base. It is a suitable weight for clothing but it is a luxury material not guaranteed to be dry cleanable and not machine washable. It is stocked in the following colours Gold, Silver, Old Gold, Old Silver, Turquoise and Fuchsia.

This well known leather is produced from split sheepskin and given an oil tannage resulting in the traditional beige colour and a drape second to none.

The Italian hides are specially chosen from large hides to give good cutting. They are available to order in an extensive range of colours and finishes. Although Italian in origin, large stocks are held in this country and an individual order is normally available within a few days.

This leather is made by a top quality Scandinavian tannery. When they have an order, they always make more than is required and only sell the very best. We buy the overrun at a considerable discount hence the price offered below. The leather has some blemishes but the quality and texture are second to none. The colours shown are current stock but may not be repeatable.

This leather was originally designed for use with German Police dogs. It is incredibly strong and yet flexible. Ideal for a tough dog harness.

Traditionally made bridle leather stuffed with oils and heavily waxed. A ‘pair of butts’ is made by cutting a long ‘wholebutt’ in half to result in two pieces approx. 66”by 24”each. Although traditionally priced per pair, they are also sold singly a ‘half a pair’.

Sometimes called kid or morocco this is a leather famed for its strength and durability. It is popular with bookbinders and makers of small goods such as wallets. It’s close grain means it can be cut very thin and still retain its strength. It is also occasionally used for chair seats.
